New Wave Dance Co. Code of Conduct

All New Wave Dance Co. activities are approached with professionalism and integrity. We are committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment that seeks not only to instill a love of dance or martial arts in our students, but to develop important life skills as well – respect, integrity, commitment, reliability and teamwork included.


To ensure a happy and positive experience for all involved, it is important that students, parents (including caretakers or legal guardians), extended friends and family members and staff understand and comply with the below.


We intend for students and parents of the New Wave Dance Co. (AKA NWDC) to strive to always behave in a positive and constructive manner and to utilize truth, fairness and integrity in the development of personal decisions and relationships both inside and out of the classroom.


New Wave Dance Co. strives to offer the highest level of instruction in a positive, respectful and caring environment. To develop and ensure this environment, we ask all of our students and our parents/caregivers/families and staff to abide by the following rules and code of conduct. These guidelines are intended to provide all parents and students guidance in daily settings from the dressing room, the dance studio, one-on-one instruction, tournaments and all NWDC events.


Student Code of Conduct
• Honesty and integrity are expected.
• Students must participate within NWDC rules and respect all the teachers/staff/volunteers and their decisions.
• Students must respect their fellow students.
• Students must not distract, bully or harass other dancers.
• Students must be polite and display good manners at all times.
• Students must refrain from cursing, using offensive racial or obscene speech, gestures or written materials.
• Students must refrain from talking back to adults or refusing to comply with reasonable requests.
• Students must refrain from physical, mental, emotional or cyber bullying other students, staff, or instructors. This includes social media postings referencing directly or indirectly to a student, staff, studio brand, and/or affiliations to the studio.
• Students and company members are the face of NWDC and should conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on the organization.
• When representing NWDC, students must continue to follow NWDC’s code of conduct as they are representatives of our organization.
• Students must respect the school and all of its property. This includes keeping the school clean and free of debris by cleaning up after yourselves.
• Students must be of the highest level of integrity, theft, fighting or intentionally damaging school property or the property of others is cause for immediate expulsion and if severe enough criminal charges.


Student etiquette
• Arrive at least five minutes prior to your scheduled class.
• If electronic log in is in place be sure to check into your class
• Come to class in a tidy and well-groomed manner with hair tied back neatly off the face.
• Uniforms and/or dance shoes must be worn for classes, where specified. Teachers may refuse entry to dancers not groomed appropriately.
• Bring a clearly named bottle of water to every class.
• Attend class regularly unless ill or injured, or in the event of a family emergency.
• Honor prior commitments made to the studio by attending classes, rehearsals and performances above other social events.
• Serve as a role model to younger students at all times, including appropriate language and behavior.
• Mobile phones should be switched off or on silent mode and are not to be used during class.
• Ask for help if you need it – we are here for you.


Parent/Guardian Code of Conduct
• Honesty and integrity are expected.
• Parents are encouraged to support their child’s/children’s involvement and help them enjoy the art of dance and/or martial arts..
• Parents must demonstrate respect for faculty and staff at all times.
• Parents must not raise issues of disagreement publicly.
• Parents will not engage in inappropriate conduct towards instructors, staff, other students and families.
• Parents must discourage challenging and inappropriate conduct towards instructors, staff, other students and families.
• Parents will refrain from physical, mental, emotional or cyber-bullying other students, staff, instructors or families. This includes social media postings referencing directly or indirectly to a student, staff, families, studio brand, and/or affiliations to the studio.
• Parents must remember that children participate in NWDC activities for their own enjoyment.
• Parents will teach their children respect for other students, teachers and adults and lead by example.
• Parents will encourage and guide their child to accept responsibility for his/her own performance and behavior.


Parent (including caretakers or legal guardians) etiquette
• Demonstrate respect for teachers, students, staff and other parents at all times.
• Take responsibility to read email and app updates and keep up-to-date with current activities and important information.
• Ensure siblings are supervised at all times, equipment is treated with care and the waiting areas are left tidy.
• Refrain from entering any dance studio unless invited by a teacher. This includes studios not in use and extends to siblings.
• Understand and support the NWDC approach by encouraging children to show commitment and positivity while working to the best of their own ability.
• Refrain from taking photographs or video without permission.
• Respect our approach to establishing and maintaining professional relationships with our students and parents by (1) ensuring all contact is made via the office in person, by phone or email and (2) refraining from direct communication with staff via personal email, text, phone or social media unless on platforms managed directly by NWDC (e.g. a private Facebook group) or deemed necessary (e.g. rescheduling a private lesson).
• Raise any concerns with a teacher or staff member by making an appointment with management.


On the occasion that repeated failure to comply with the Code of Conduct occurs, NWDC reserves the right, at its discretion, to dismiss or take disciplinary action on any students or parent/guardian/family member who breach NWDC’s code of conduct.
Please remember – it is a privilege to participate in classes and performances. One’s behavior must emulate that privilege.

Non-Discrimination Policy NWDC admits students of any race, color, sexual orientation, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sexual orientation, national and ethnic origin in administration of its education policies, admissions policies, scholarship programs or any other programs.
Note: These statements are also found on our registration form and must be agreed to before a dancer may enroll for classes.


Teacher/Staff and volunteers


Staff and volunteers must not:
• develop any ‘special’ relationships with children that could be seen as favoritism (for example, the offering of gifts or special treatment for specific children);
• exhibit behaviors with children which may be construed as unnecessarily physical (for example inappropriate sitting on laps);
• put children at risk of abuse (for example, by locking doors);
• do things of a personal nature that a child can do for themselves, such as toileting or changing clothes;
• engage in open discussions of a mature or adult nature in the presence of children (for example, personal social activities);
• use inappropriate language in the presence of children;
• express personal views on cultures, race or sexuality in the presence of children;
• discriminate against any child, including because of culture, race, ethnicity or disability;


Disciplinary actions
• Inappropriate, disrespectful or aggressive behaviour by students, parents (including caregivers or legal guardians), extended friends and family, staff or volunteers will not be tolerated and may result in immediate cancellation of enrolment with no refund or further discussion or immediate termination of employment or contract.
• A breach of the Code of Conduct will result in one written warning. Further breaches may result in immediate cancellation of enrolment with no refund or further discussion or immediate termination of employment or contract.
